WEST LIBERTY, Iowa – Officials say one person was taken to the hospital after being shot by a police officer in West Liberty Sunday morning.
According to officials, at around 6:45 a.m., officers with West Liberty Police and the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 500 block of N Elm Street in West Liberty for a domestic disturbance.

When approaching the suspect, police say the suspect ‘advanced’ toward officers while armed with a knife.
According to officials, officers tried deploying a Taser, but it was not effective. Instead, an officer with West Liberty Police shot the suspect. The suspect was then disarmed and taken into custody.
According to officials, officers ‘immediately’ rendered emergency medical aid before the suspect was taken to the hospital in Iowa City for treatment of their injuries.
Dispatch audio recordings indicate the suspect is a 36-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to his stomach.
The suspect’s current condition is unknown.
Officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public, and this was an isolated incident.
No injuries were reported for the officers involved. The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on ‘critical incident leave’ in accordance with department policy, according to officials.
