IOWA CITY, Iowa – An Iowa City man was arrested Friday night in connection to a shooting that afternoon.
Xzavier Herman, 22, faces several charges including Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, a Class C Felony, Possession of Firearm as Felon, Second Offense, and Going Armed with Intent, both a Class D Felony.
At around 1:30 p.m. Friday, officers responded to reports of a shooting near the 900 block of East College Street indicating someone had been shot in the chest, according to Iowa City Police.
Officers on scene confirmed there was a shooting but nobody was struck by the gunfire, according to Iowa City Police.
According to the arrest affidavit, Herman allegedly hit the victim in the back of the head with a 9mm Smith and Wesson handgun before firing a bullet.
Police say the bullet was found lodged inside a neighboring apartment, affidavits show.
During an interview with investigators, Herman admitted he armed himself with the handgun ‘with the intent to commit an assault on the victim,’ affidavits show.
Investigators later conducted a search warrant in Cedar Rapids where they found a handgun Herman admitted he used in the shooting, affidavits show.
According to police, Herman is prohibited from possessing firearms due to a Robbery and Weapons conviction as a minor.
In June 2022, Herman was convicted for Possession of Firearm as a Felon after flashing a handgun at other people earlier that year. He was sentenced to three years of probation, but later served time in jail for violating probation and a new theft conviction, court records show.
Herman was released from his probation in May 2025, court records show.
Herman is being held at Johnson County Jail on a $26,000 bond pending a court appearance, jail records show.
