Criminal charges filed in connection to crash that killed Princeton man in November

OTTAWA, Ill. – A Livingston County man faces several criminal charges in connection to a crash near Ottawa that killed a Princeton man on Thanksgiving weekend.

Daniel P. Olson, 56, of Manville, faces several charges including Reckless Homicide, a Class 3 Felony. He is accused of using a cell phone to access the internet while driving, and failing to reduce speed, causing him to strike another vehicle and killing a passenger, according to the criminal complaint I obtained Thursday.

David Camp, of Princeton, who was a passenger in the vehicle Olson struck, was killed in the crash, and two of his family members were injured and airlifted to a regional hospital.

In addition to Reckless Homicide, Olson faces an additional charge of Aggravated Unlawful Use of an Electronic Communication Device, a Class 4 Felony, for the death of Camp.

Olson also faces two additional counts of the same charge for injuries suffered by Camp’s two family members in the vehicle, both a Class A Misdemeanor.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, it happened in the afternoon on the day after Thanksgiving at the intersection of Illinois Route 23 and North 32nd Road near Ottawa.

Court records show the charges were filed Tuesday but Olson was not arrested. He is set to appear in La Salle County court for his first appearance on July 31 at 9 a.m.

Camp’s family does not wish to provide a statement at this time while case is ongoing.

In November, the Sheriff’s Office said the Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Team was assisting the investigation.
