LE CLAIRE, Iowa – Court documents reveal new details about a police standoff with a man near an elementary school in Le Claire in early December.
Wesley Whitford, 33, of Le Claire, faces several charges including:
• First Degree Criminal Mischief (F)
• Interference with Deadly Weapon (F)
• First Degree Harassment (M)
• Reckless Use of Firearm [3] (M)
On the morning of Dec. 3, Scott County Sheriff Tim Lane said the man was experiencing an apparent mental health emergency Tuesday night, with guns present in the home, which led to cancelled classes at Bridgeview Elementary School.

Allegations.
Beginning at around 1:45 a.m. the night of Dec. 2, Whitford became agitated while staying at his father’s home located in the 300 block of Stagecoach Trail, arrest affidavits show.
During this outburst, he caused over $10,000 in damage to the interior of the home and threatened his father multiple times, arrest affidavits show.
Whitford confronted his father in a menacing manner, saying, ‘I’ll mess you up,’ and sent text messages stating he would ‘use hollow-point bullets.’ He also sent his father photos of firearms, affidavits show.
While outside the house, Whitford’s father reported hearing a gunshot, affidavits show.
Whitford is accused of recklessly firing a 12-gauge shotgun and 9mm handgun, causing damage inside the home, affidavits show.
When officers approached Whitford, he refused to surrender and threatened to shoot them while holding a firearm, affidavits show.
In addition to threatening family and law enforcement, police say Whitford broke windows throughout the home and threw belongings outside.
Police say officers stayed in the area and monitored the home at all times during the incident. And Scott County’s Specialized Response Team (SRT) along with two armored vehicles were deployed.
At around 4:30 p.m, a warrant was issued for Whitford’s arrest, records show.
Shortly after 6 p.m., police say Whitford was taken into custody without anyone being seriously injured.
After his arrest, officers discovered Whitford had fired ‘multiple gunshots’ inside the home, affidavits show.

School impact.
In addition to Bridgeview Elementary, Y-Care was also closed for the day, according to the district.
Wednesday had already been scheduled to be an early dismissal, or half-day, according to the district.
No other schools were affected.

Whitford has invoked his right to a speedy trial, of which must begin on or before April 9, court documents show. He remains in custody at the Scott County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.

Whitford enters a plea of Not Guilty.

A hearing to discuss bond reduction is set for Jan. 20 at 1:30 p.m. Arraignment is still set for Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. Whitford remains in custody at the Scott County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond.
