SAVANNA, Ill. – Multiple police officers and a suspect were injured in a multi-county pursuit that began in Freeport Wednesday night and ended with gunfire in Savanna early Thursday morning.
According to officials, Freeport Police responded to a report of a suspected stolen vehicle at around 10:19 p.m. Wednesday, but when officers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled, nearly striking a squad car and another passing vehicle in the process.
Officials say officers ultimately lost sight of the vehicle and called off the chase.
Later in the evening, a Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Deputy located the vehicle near Hanover and initiated a short pursuit before the chase was ultimately called off again, according to officials.
Officials say the chase resumed around 3:40 a.m. when the suspect was located near Savanna.
During the pursuit, officials say the suspect drove into a squad car, disabling it.
The first radio transmission of shots fired can be heard at around 3:45 a.m. with additional shots fired reported by officials from 3:48 a.m. to 3:49 a.m. around the time an officer requests an ambulance.
“We need an ambulance at this location now. He has taken gunshots.”
The suspect crashed at the intersection of Chicago St. and Park St. in Savanna and struck a Mount Carroll Police Department squad car, according to officials.
Officials on Friday said the suspect is still recovering from injuries at a regional hospital.
Multiple officers from the Savanna Police Department, Mount Carroll Police Department, and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office were injured and taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Illinois State Police has taken over the investigation, but would not provide any further details.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided separately as they become available.
